Trust in a review site comes from knowing how the conclusions were reached. Here’s exactly how ScoutVetted works.
1. We pick categories where a wrong choice actually hurts
We don’t review everything. We focus on car and travel gear that costs real money, gets used in tough conditions (heat, vibration, long hours), and where marketing claims are hardest for a buyer to check: dash cams, power stations, jump starters, diagnostic tools, and similar.
2. We shortlist by specification, not popularity
For every guide we start with the full set of products in the category on Amazon.com, then narrow using the specifications that matter for that product type. For a dash cam that means the image sensor, whether it uses a supercapacitor or a lithium battery, the parking-mode design and the field of view — not the marketing resolution number.
3. We read the reviews that matter — including the bad ones
Star averages hide a lot. For each shortlisted product we read through verified-owner reviews with attention to the one- and two-star ones, looking for repeated patterns: failures after a summer of heat, apps that stop connecting, cards that corrupt. A product with a 4.5 average and a consistent failure pattern doesn’t make our list.
4. We test what we can
Where we can obtain the product, we use it the way a real owner would — a dash cam on a real dashboard for weeks, a jump starter on an actual flat battery, a power station running a real fridge. When a recommendation is based on research rather than hands-on use, we say so in the guide.
5. Every product gets a “who should skip it”
No product suits everyone. Each recommendation states who it’s right for and who should buy something else — even if that something else isn’t on our list.
6. We keep guides current
Prices, models and firmware change. Guides are re-checked regularly and the “last updated” date at the top of each one is real. If a recommended product is discontinued or develops a known problem, we update or remove it.
What we don’t do
- We don’t accept payment, free products or sponsorships in exchange for coverage or placement.
- We don’t let affiliate commission rates influence rankings. A product earning a higher commission gets no advantage.
- We don’t publish AI-generated filler. Guides are researched and written by a person who is accountable for them.
Corrections
If you find an error — a wrong specification, a discontinued product, an outdated price — please contact us. We correct mistakes promptly and note significant changes in the guide.
